The Starlink satellite system, developed by SpaceX, has revolutionized the way communications are managed in conflict areas. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the low-orbit satellite network has provided stable and secure internet connectivity to the Ukrainian armed forces, government institutions and humanitarian operations.

But what would happen if Starlink were deactivated? What would be the consequences for Ukraine's defense capability? In this article, we analyze the strategic role of Starlink in the war and the serious operational impact that a potential interruption could have.

1. Secure and resilient communications

• fornisce un’alternativa alle reti tradizionali (che possono essere facilmente intercettate o distrutte dai russi);
• garantisce comunicazioni criptate e difficilmente disturbabili, essenziali per le operazioni militari;
• permette il coordinamento in tempo reale tra le truppe, migliorando la reattività strategica.

2. Support for combat drones

Ukraine has extensively used reconnaissance and attack drones, such as the Bayraktar TB2 and other advanced models, which depend on satellite connections for remote control. Starlink has enabled:
• effective surveillance operations, monitoring enemy movements with precision;
• coordination of units at a distance, especially in more isolated areas;
• targeted attacks thanks to the real-time transmission of data to command centers.

3. Governmental and Civil Communications

In addition to military use, Starlink has been essential for keeping Ukrainian institutions operational and maintaining communications with the population. It has allowed to:
• keep government services active, even during terrestrial infrastructure blackouts;
• ensure connection for civilians and humanitarian organizations, facilitating access to information and aid;
• counter the Russian information war by keeping independent communication channels open.

If Starlink were to stop functioning in Ukraine, the Ukrainian armed forces and institutions would suffer severe strategic and operational consequences.

1. Loss of secure communications

• The Ukrainian forces would be forced to depend on vulnerable networks, easily interceptable or subject to Russian cyber-attacks.
• The coordination between military units would be compromised, reducing the effectiveness of defensive and offensive operations.

2. Inefficiency in drone operations
• Without Starlink, remote control of drones would become unstable or impossible, limiting surveillance and targeted attack capability.
• Precision attacks would be reduced, giving a significant advantage to Russian forces.

3. Blackout of Ukrainian digital infrastructure
• Government services and institutional communications could collapse, paralyzing conflict management.
• Civilians would lose access to the internet, increasing chaos and misinformation.
• NGOs and humanitarian missions would be less efficient in distributing aid and coordinating relief efforts.

Conclusion

Starlink has proven to be a strategic weapon for Ukraine, enabling secure communications, military coordination, and drone operations. Its potential deactivation would represent a severe blow to Ukrainian defense, reducing the ability to resist against the Russian invasion.

For this reason, the government of Kiev and its Western allies continue to support the use of Starlink, recognizing its fundamental role in the defense of the territory and the digital resilience of the country.
